China in Madagascar: Building Centrality through Economic Development and Maritime Engagement

(co-author with Vishal Choudhury) ‘China in Madagascar: Building Centrality through Economic Development and Maritime Engagement’, Journal of Indian Ocean Studies, Vol. 32, No. 2. May–August 2024. 239-254.

Abstract

Madagascar’s location and natural resources give it a certain weight in geopolitics despite its low population and weak political and economic indicators. This essay explains how China has used Madagascar’s internal weaknesses and the lack of adequate attention given to it by other major powers, including India, to gain a political foothold on the island.
